Mid-90s collaboration between Malian guitarist Ali Farka Touré and American musician Ry Cooder, recorded in just three days in Los Angeles and built around the deep musical connection between Saharan desert blues and the roots of American blues music.
With Cooder deliberately restraining his playing to preserve Touré’s hypnotic guitar style and Songhai vocal traditions, the record offered a cultural bridge that helped popularise African desert blues internationally and cement Touré’s reputation as the ‘Hendrix of the Sahara.’
