Recorded privately in Ethiopia during the 1970s by nun and composer Emahoy Tsegué-Maryam Guèbrou, Church of Kidane Mehret is part Ethiopian Orthodox spirituality and part meditative piano compositions shaped by classical music, jazz and traditional East African melody.
Sparse, devotional and emotionally weightless, the recordings remained largely unknown outside Ethiopia for decades before later becoming a cult discovery among ambient, spiritual jazz and experimental music audiences.
Balancing solitude, faith and introspection, the album documents a singular musical voice existing far outside both Western classical convention and contemporary African popular music, helping cement Emahoy’s posthumous reputation as one of the most extraordinary rediscovered composers of the 20th century.
