MULATU ASTATKE - NEW YORK-ADDIS-LONDON, THE STORY OF ETHIO JAZZ 1965-1975

£36.00

2009 Strut Records compilation assembling Mulatu Astatke recordings made between 1965 and 1975 across Addis Ababa, New York and London, documenting the emergence of Ethio-jazz in real time through his pioneering fusion of Ethiopian melodies, Latin rhythms and American jazz.

Featuring cornerstones of the Ethio-jazz genre including “Tezeta,” “Yèkèrmo Sèw” and “Mulatu,” the collection captures Ethiopia’s musical golden age before the political upheaval of the mid-70s.

Alongside the Éthiopiques series and Jim Jarmusch’s Broken Flowers, the compilation helped cement Mulatu Astatke’s later reputation as the globally revered father of Ethio-jazz through the international crate-digger, jazz and world music rediscovery movement of the 1990s and 2000s.
