Created during Sly Stone’s increasingly isolated and drug-fuelled period at the Record Plant studios in California, the 1971 masterpiece abandoned the psychedelic optimism and ideals of peace, unity and social progress that had defined the late 60s counterculture movement, replacing them with a murky, paranoid and emotionally exhausted vision of America entering the Nixon era.
Centred around the haunting drum-machine pulse of “Family Affair” and the slow-motion reinvention of earlier hit “Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin)” as “Thank You For Talkin’ To Me Africa,” the record transformed funk into something darker, fragmented and deeply introspective, later becoming one of the most influential albums in psychedelic soul and funk history.
