First released in Jamaica in December 1972, widely regarded as one of the first full-length dub albums and a true landmark in reggae history. Produced by the visionary innovator Lee “Scratch” Perry, it marks the decisive moment when dub evolved from incidental B-sides into a fully realized long-playing art form.
At a time when Jamaican sound system culture was flourishing, producers were beginning to strip down popular reggae tracks into instrumental “versions,” emphasizing the bass and drums for sound system deejays to toast over while adding echo and reverb effects to make things more interesting and dynamic. While King Tubby, who was in charge of mixing the tracks, was pioneering the technical foundations of dub, Perry expanded the approach by adding the hypnotic and psychedelic sound effects that made this record so rich in ideas, rendering the album more conceptually bold.
The records radical use of echo, reverb and stripped-back rhythms transformed the mixing desk into a creative instrument, laying the foundations for production techniques that would influence everything from post-punk and hip-hop to electronic music.
